Vik,
You truly hit the nail right on the head as others have said. As a recent law school graduate I face a horrible economy in which to seek out a job yet by putting myself out there even if unemployed I am still building a valuable personal brand and positioning myself for long term success. I am sick of hearing people complain about being unemployed but doing nothing about it. I think one of the most important things people should be doing is like you said talking about their passions and shaking hands as you never know when you will find yourself in the company of someone all too willing to help. Great to see all of you guys on here participating in this conversation and positioning yourself for a truly bright future.

I accidently marked Scott Mueller's comment as SPAM and was having a tough time finding it, so I'm posting it on his behalf:

Vik,

Great post, really enjoyed it. Forwarded it to my wife... she's been distressed about "green" for a couple of years now. GeekGiant and Danny are both right, " green" and "cloud" are marketing buzz and not much more. If we could monetize a green-twitter-cloud account on Oprah we'd all be millionaires.

Here's a link from my Twitter back in March: http://twitter.com/CultureSculptor/status/1395489589 Which links to an article in WSJ about anything with "cloud" making more money and no one really knowing why... http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123802623665542725.html#mod=todays_us_nonsub_page_one

I also find both of these debates remarkably amusing, because I happen to own a consulting business that I would say is operating 100% in the cloud through SAS (Software as Service) and happen to also be building a sustainable farm. Am I part of the hype or part of the solution?

i agree, you nailed it. my recent experience with this parking lot ordeal is a testament to 'just do something,' in that by making the video, i've connected with maybe twenty people whoa are interested. i've been tasked with trying to get the capitol hill garage sale on the lot, i've met architects who want to do some subversive public art and gardening, not to mention that it led me to rant on konstructr and meet scott.

anyway, i didn't mean to turn this into the story of my last few weeks but i've found myself buried in action after a day of creating and connecting.

You nailed it, Vik. For a lot of us, we'll never have opportunities like this again in our lifetime. It's hard to see unless you take a step back and really soak it in. Cheers!

Gentlemen, coming from one of the most depressed cities in the union right now (Cleveland, OH), the future is bright and only those that run to it will be able to bask in its warmth. This town is poised for its first professional championship in generations! In any sport! There are still people that expect them to fail because they don't know what it is like to win. Imagine being surrounded by millions of glass half-empty people and it is bound to drag you down. Surround yourself with optimists and life will be much more enjoyable, I guarantee it! Make a daily commitment to smile more, laugh through adversity and attack each challenge with a CRUSH IT attitude and the rewards will be limitless.

Great work!

Your comment above brings a lot of issues to the surface. I've said for the past year that we need to go back to the fundamentals of hard work. The whole world has changed and we need to regroup and refocus.

In today's world whoever works the hardest (smartest is a given) will win!

Great link Sam!

I think in this area the two biggest human blocks to success are laziness and fear of failure. People are afraid to fail (like John said) and are often too lazy to get off their butt and get out there. You won't succeed unless you have conquered these personality defects :)

In this area, I agree with many that say our generation has a sense of entitlement. I don't think it's true for everyone, we're an awesome generation, but I do see a-lot of people who expect things to just be handed to them, and they don't know what to do when that doesn't happen.

John - Agreed. You'll get bumped and bruised and that's okay. You might even fall down and stay down for a bit...but keep getting back up and trying. If you go left and it doesn't work, go right, maybe do a zig-zag pattern...try everything and ANYTHING - at least initially!

Great post Vik. You hit the nail right on the head. It's all about going out there and seeing what happens...never know until you try. You might get a "no" from people or you might even fail, but the fact is that you tried and gave it your best. Gotta keep trying and failing to succeed in the future. I'm taking advantage of an amazing opportunity I have right now and even though there have been a few bumps in the first week, I'm pushing through and doing what I can to get to where I want to be.

Thanks,
John
